I own what may be the most sensible shoe cupboard in Britain. Black, beige, low heels, nothing too loud. For years I bought the same plain ballet flats because they seemed practical, then wondered why every outfit felt a little unfinished.

I did not want towering heels. I did not want a shoe that only worked with one dress. And I certainly did not want to rebuild my wardrobe around whatever happened to be fashionable that month.

This was the real test. A shoe can be beautiful and still be useless if it demands the perfect outfit.

I tried the Orchard with jeans and a shirt. Then with black trousers and a knit. Then with a midi dress I usually save for lunch. The same pair worked each time because the shape is clean enough to blend in, while the gold detail stops it disappearing.

That balance is rarer than it sounds. Interesting, but not difficult. Polished, but not overdressed.

Five: the colours make sense rather than merely making a statement

Black was my obvious choice, but each shade has a place. Beige softens lighter neutrals. Brown sits beautifully with denim and autumn knits. Green adds colour without becoming loud. Red can carry an otherwise simple outfit almost by itself.

The point is not to become a different person when you put them on. It is to choose the version that feels most like you — and let one thoughtful detail make the clothes you already own feel new again.
